Prayers of St. Thomas Aquinas

  1. Prayer for Enlightenment
O Merciful God, grant that I may ever perfectly do Your Will in all things. Let it be my ambition to work only for Your honor and glory. Let me rejoice in nothing but what leads to You, nor grieve for anything that leads away from You. May all passing things be as nothing in my eyes, and may all that is Yours be dear to me, and You, O God, dear above them all. May all joy be meaningless without You and may I desire nothing apart from You. May all labor and toil delight me when it is for You.
  1. Prayer for Right Ordering of Life
Grant me, O Lord my God, a mind to know you, a heart to seek you, wisdom to find you, conduct pleasing to you, faithful perseverance in waiting for you, and a hope of finally embracing you. Amen.
  1. Prayer Before Study
Ineffable Creator, Who, from the treasures of Your wisdom, have established three hierarchies of angels, have arrayed them in marvelous order above the fiery heavens, and have marshaled the regions of the universe with such artful skill, You are proclaimed the true font of light and wisdom, and the primal origin raised high beyond all things. Pour forth a ray of Your brightness into the darkened places of my mind; disperse from my soul the twofold darkness into which I was born: sin and ignorance. You make eloquent the tongues of infants. Refine my speech and pour forth upon my lips the goodness of Your blessing. Grant to me keenness of mind, capacity to remember, skill in learning, subtlety to interpret, and eloquence in speech. May You guide the beginning of my work, direct its progress, and bring it to completion. You Who are true God and true Man, who live and reign, world without end. Amen.
  1. Prayer for the Attainment of Heaven

God of all consolation, You see nothing in us but what You have given us. I invoke Your help: after this life has run its course grant me, in heaven, with You, a share in the fullness of Your blessings. Other people will ask You for other things: but I ask only to see You. I ask not for the company of men or of angels: You alone, O Lord, are all I desire. May all things be a real gain to me which help me on my way to You; may all things be a loss to me which might keep me from You. Amen.

  1. Prayer for Guidance

Direct, we beg You, O Lord, our actions by Your holy inspirations and carry them on by Your gracious assistance that every prayer and work of ours may always begin from You and through You be happily ended. Amen.
